He clashed with Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, who called him 'incompetent.'
While Governor General of Canada, he slipped away from Princess Elizabeth's royal tour to get in a day of fishing (1951).
As Defence Minister, he had little real power, since Prime Minister Winston Churchill continued making most of the important decisions himself.

Why he might not be annoying:

During World War I, he received the Military Cross for bravery, the Distinguished Service Order and the French Legion of Honor.
He oversaw the British evacuation at Dunkirk, leaving the beach on the last destroyer (June 3, 1940).
General Omar Bradley named him one of the ten all-time greatest military leaders.
