He got into a public feud with Thabo Mbeki over the government’s policies. Mbeki responded by saying: 'It would be good if those that present themselves as the greatest defenders of the poor should also demonstrate decent respect for the truth' (2004).

He was the first black African head of the Anglican Church in South Africa.

He called Robert Mugabe a 'caricature of an African dictator.'
He defended the confirmation of openly gay bishop Gene Robinson, saying: 'For [the Anglican Church in South Africa], that doesn't make a difference, the sexual orientation.'
He has honorary doctorates from universities in America, the United Kingdom and Germany.
