He became famous for discovering Elvis Presley.
He was one of the first white people to realize the economic potential of black music.
In a Rolling Stone interview, he said: 'Had I not experienced what I did, it would be very difficult for me to feel...my kindredness with the black people, with music, with poor Southern whites, with the misunderstood peoples of the South.'
Other than Elvis, he discovered or contracted many legends, including Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty, Charlie Rich, Howling Wolf and Jerry Lee Lewis.
He was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986).
