He dropped out of high school.
Growing up in a multi-ethnic climate led him to many fights.
He hoped to become a baseball catcher but blew his arm out.
He twice failed to get a driver's license.
He was a chimney sweep.
He was a 2 pack a day smoker.
In his first amateur fight, he was losing so he kneed his opponent in the groin and was disqualified.

Why he might not be annoying:

At a year and a half he nearly died from pneumonia.
He grew up poor.
He served in WW II.
He learned from his first amateur match, that he need to train harder, and he did.
90% of his fights were won by knock outs.
He died in a plane crash the day before he would have turned forty--six (August 31, 1969).
