    His stammer kept him from joining the Royal Flying Corps during World War I.
    He wrote under a pseudonym out of fear that his fellow engineers would not take him seriously if they knew he was an author of fiction.
    He called writing ‘a pansy occupation.’

    He served as a stretcher bearer during the Easter Rebellion in Dublin (1916).
    He was named a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society for developing the first British plane with a retractable undercarriage.
    He worked on a secret weapons development program for the British military during World War II.
    He was sent by the Ministry of Information to cover the D-Day landings and the Burma campaign.
    His depiction in ‘On The Beach’ of the world destroyed by radiation after a nuclear war influenced American public opinion in favor of an atmospheric test ban treaty.
