Why he might be annoying:

He had a girly name.
He was one of the first athletes to make product endorsements.
He appeared in a cheesy Vaudeville act in the off-season.
He put his name on a series of books for boys that were actually ghost written by a baseball writer.
His nickname was ‘The Big 6’ after a fast-running train of the era.

Why he might not be annoying:

A fan once sent a letter addressed with only a giant 6 on the envelope, and the post office delivered it to him.
He had a clean-cut, All American image in a time when baseball was populated by rowdy thugs.
His brother committed suicide.
He won more games than any other National League pitcher.
He won 20 games 13 times, and 30 games 4 times.
He served in World War I and contracted tuberculosis as a result of being gassed.
He was the first baseball star who was also a college graduate.
He threw three shutouts in the 1905 World Series.
He was instrumental in uncovering the ‘Black Sox’ scandal of the 1919 World Series.
Since he played at a time when uniform numbers weren’t used, the Giants organization retired his name.
He was one of the founding inductees in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
