Vocalist

The Resume

    (January 4, 1946-November 17, 2003)
    Born in McIntosh County, Georgia
Recorded the singles ‘Sweet Soul Music’ (1967), ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’ (1967) and ‘Funky Street’ (1968)

Why he might be annoying:

Before his voice changed, he sang with an all-girl gospel group.
He and Otis Redding were credited with writing ‘Sweet Soul Music,’ but the tune was borrowed from Sam Cooke’s ‘Yeah Man.’
Cooke was added to the writing credits after his publisher threatened to sue.
After several years without a hit, he tried to make lightning strike twice by recording ‘More Sweet Soul Music.’
He moved to the Netherlands and changed his name to Lee Roberts.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a protege of Otis Redding, who called him ‘the most dynamic talent I’ve ever heard.’
‘Sweet Soul Music’ hit #2 on Billboards pop and R&B charts, making it a bigger hit than any of Redding’s own songs up to that time.
His song ‘Aunt Dora’s Soul Shack’ inspired the Temptations’ hit ‘Psychedelic Shack.’
One of the reasons he moved overseas and changed his name was so he could be gay openly.
