The Resume

    Born in Paris, France
Division commander during the French Revolution (1791-93)
    Went into exile (1793-1815)
Proclaimed king after the July Revolution overthrew Charles X (1830)
    Overthrown in another revolution (1848)

Why he might be annoying:

He first went into exile after plotting with the commander of the Army of the North to ally with Austria, march on Paris and overthrow the Republic.
While working under an assumed name as a teacher at a Swiss boarding school, he knocked up the school cook (1794).
At the beginning of his reign, financier Jacques Lafitte declared, 'From now on, the bankers will rule.'
He refused to expand voting rights from landowners to the middle class.
    His government became increasingly reactionary.
Queen Victoria wrote that he 'took a pleasure in being cleverer and more cunning than others, often when there was no advantage to be gained by it.'
Honore Daumier caricatured his deteriorating popularity by showing him turning into a pear.
During the Revolution of 1848, he had to escape the palace by a rear exit, take refuge in a gardener's cottage and be smuggled out of the country by the British consul as 'Mr. Smith.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He dove into a river to rescue an engineer from drowning (1791).
His father was executed during the Reign of Terror (1793).
He was grazed by a bullet in an assassination attempt (1835).
His oldest son died in a carriage accident (1842).
He avoided the pomp and lavish spending of his predecessors.
At the beginning of his reign, he was nicknamed 'the Citizen King.'
Victor Hugo wrote, 'Take away Louis Philippe the king, there remains the man. And the man is good. He is good at times even to the point of being admirable.'
