Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of Texas A & M University when he landed a record contract.
He recorded his first album entirely in Spanish, despite the fact he never actually spoke the language.
He initially balked at the label's decision, citing he didn't want to be viewed as a Tejano artist crossing into country music.
He walked away from his contract with Columbia Records after three albums, citing he wanted to change his musical direction.
His decision did not fare well, as his commercial success and airplay dried up shortly afterwards.

Why he might not be annoying:

He got his break through luck, when a record made an unexpected stop at an Austin area club he regularly performed at.
His single 'Just Enough Rope'/'Bastante Cordón' is the first country music single to be recorded in both English and Spanish.
His debut album 'Dos Mundos' is the first Spanish country album to sell over 500,000 copies and become certified gold.
Following the success of his debut album 'Dos Mundos', he continued to record his mainstream albums in Spanish, in order to keep his Hispanic fanbase.
He clarified his decision to leave the mainstream labels was because he felt he was being manufactured by the record label to fit their image of a country star, which he disagreed with.
