Why she might be annoying:

    She went by a pretentious single name.
    She appeared in black face to portray an African snake charmer in 'The Pearls of the Crown.' (1937)
    She was jailed for two months after World War II for 'horizontal collaboration' -- conducting an affair with a German Luftwaffe officer.
    Her explanation: 'My heart is French, but my ass is international.'

Why she might not be annoying:

    After her lover died in World War I, she swore she would never marry 'not to become a war widow or, what would be worse, the mother of a soldier.'
    Although she had a German lover, she refused to work for German filmmakers during WWII.
    She had to retire from acting after an accident left her nearly blind (1963).
    The Independent described her as having an air of 'sexy nonchalance.'
