Why he might be annoying:

    He was estranged from his father.
    He sued the right-wing newspaper Common Sense for libel after the paper claimed he was a Communist and won a court award of $30,000, which he was never able to collect.
    He wrote: 'The negroes in Harlem still remind us of the times of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Therefore we cannot understand that the Jews there, too, regard the negroes with great indifference, and that they are equally haughty.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was repeatedly arrested by the Gestapo for protesting Hitler and Nazism.
    He was able to secure a visa to emigrate to the United States thanks to attaining sponsorship from Rabbi Stephen Wise (who had connections to FDR).
    Before being driven out of Germany, he had served as rabbi of the Jewish community in Berlin for 12 years.
    When he came to America, he was named rabbi of Temple B'nai Abraham in Newark, the second oldest Jewish congregation in New Jersey (he served until his retirement in 1977).
    He took part in many demonstrations for civil-rights causes in the New York metropolitan region and in the South.
    He was the lead-in speaker to Dr. Martin Luther King before he made his famed 'I Have a Dream' speech.
    In his address, he said, 'The most urgent, the most disgraceful, the most shameful and the most tragic problem is silence.'
