    Founding editor of New Republic magazine (1914)
    Received two Pulitzer Prizes for his syndicated newspaper column, 'Today and Tomorrow' (1958,1962)
    Wrote 'Drift and Mastery' (1914), 'Public Opinion' (1922), 'The Phantom Public' (1925), 'American Inquisitors' (1928), 'The Good Society' (1937), 'The Cold War' (1947) and 'Essays in Public Philosophy' (1955)

Why he might be annoying:

    He wrote columns calling Hitler 'statesmanlike' and 'the authentic voice of a genuinely civilized people.'
    He suggested Europe's 'overpopulation problem' could be solved by shipping the continent's Jews to Africa (1938).
    He would frequently do a 180 on an issue over a few months.
    The told fellow commentators 'There should be a large air space between a journalist and the head of a state' while being an insider in a series of presidential administrations.
    He was an elitist who considered the public incompetents that needed to be governed by 'a specialized class' of experts.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He graduated from Harvard in only three years.
    Time magazine noted, 'Wrong he might sometime be, but rarely uncertain.'
    He helped fashion the Lend Lease program to provide aid to Britain before US entry into World War II.
    He opposed the war in Vietnam on the pragmatic grounds that any benefits from a victory would not be worth the price.
