Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of school in the second grade.
In his teens, he made his living as a pool shark in his hometown.
While trying to lose weight in the 60s, he became addicted to diet pills and tranquilizers.
He was nicknamed ‘the Sad Poet’ because so many of his songs were about loneliness and lost love.

Why he might not be annoying:

Perhaps to make up for his lack of education, he became a voracious reader as an adult.
He wrote two country standards, ‘Oh Lonesome Me’ and ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You,’ in a single afternoon.
’I Can’t Stop Loving You’ has been recorded by over 700 performers, most notably Ray Charles, whose version hit #1 on Billboard’s pop, rhythm and blues, and easy listening charts (1962).
He credited his wife, Bobbi Patterson, with making it possible for him to overcome his chemical dependency.
