Why he might be annoying:

The Medved brothers nicknamed him 'One-Shot' and nominated him as one of the four worst directors of all time for his tendency to print any take regardless of technical screw-ups.
After losing his fortune in the 1929 stock market crash, he ended up working for low-budget 'Poverty Row' studios.
When an executive complained about one of his films falling behind schedule, he replied, 'You mean someone out there is actually waiting to see this shit?'
Despite being an atheist, he directed ten 'spread the word of God' movies for the Protestant Film Commission.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was thirteen, his father and older brother died of pneumonia, leaving him the sole support for his mother and younger brother.
Before being reduced to hackwork on low-budget films, he was a respected director.
He was an assistant director on D. W. Griffith's classics 'Birth of a Nation' (1915) and 'Intolerance' (1916).
He was married to Marguerite Fleischer for 56 years until his death.
He was honored by the American Film Institute as Hollywood's longest-working director (1969).
