She released a greatest hits album before recording the three biggest hits of her career.
She sued Motown for back royalties and requested the contract she signed with them at age 17 be voided.
After leaving Motown, she recorded with several different record labels and found little success.
Her song ‘My Guy' was parodied as ‘My God' in the Whoopi Goldberg film, ‘Sister Act.'

As a child, she suffered from temporary paralysis and briefly lost her eyesight and hearing due to spinal meningitis.
She had a 'soft and sexy' singing voice.
Her song, ‘My Guy,' hit number one on the United States pop chart.
The Beatles once called her their ‘favorite American singer' and invited her to tour the UK with them.
She testified in front of the United States Congress in support of cancer research funding.
