He had a thick Kentucky accent.
He attempted suicide as a college student.
As a young man, he was a fierce cultural conservative who defended segregation.
He romanticized the Old South.

As he got older, he became more tolerant of different people and views.
He came to argue against segregation.
He lost an eye when his brother hit him in the face with a lump of coal.
He had degrees from Vanderbilt, Berkeley and Oxford.
He was an influential teacher and critic.
He was the first Poet Laureate of the United States.
He was a successful novelist as well as poet.
His story ‘Christmas Gift’ is said to have inspired the movie ‘Shrek.’
