Why he might be annoying:

Before going solo, he was the male half of an act called 'Lulu Belle and Burr Head.'
He briefly tried for a movie career as a singing cowboy (1941).
Perhaps to burnish his cowboy credentials, he changed his place of birth to New Mexico.
His second wife committed suicide after discovering his affair with the woman who became his third wife (1951).
One of his nicknames was 'the Barnyard Bing Crosby.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His first wife died in childbirth (1933).
He was one of the first country singers to regularly cross over, with 'Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy' hitting #1 on both the country and pop charts.
He lobbied to get 'Billboard' and other entertainment magazines to replace 'hillbilly' with the less derisory term 'country.'
He sang at Harry S Truman's inaugural ball (1949).
His recording of '(There'll Be) Peace in the Valley (For Me)' was one of the first gospel songs to sell a million singles and was added the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.
He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for recordings and television.
