    Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress (1966-68)
    Wrote the poetry collections 'Into Stone' (1960), 'Drowning with Others' (1962), 'Buckdancer's Choice' (1965), 'The Eye-Beaters' (1970), 'Zodiac' (1976), 'Scion' (1980), 'Puella' (1982) and 'The Central Motion' (1983)
    Wrote the novel 'Deliverance' (1970)
    Wrote the screenplay and made a cameo as a sheriff for the film version of 'Deliverance' (1972)

Why he might be annoying:

    He said his first literary effort was 'writing erotic love letters to girls back in Atlanta and Montgomery.'
    He worked as an advertising copywriter, which he described as 'selling my soul to the devil all day.'
    He was a womanizing alcoholic.
    Two months after his wife died, he married one of his former students.

    He was a pilot with the Army in World War II and the Air Force during the Korean War.
    He excelled at archery.
    He read a poem at the inauguration of Jimmy Carter.
