Formed by the UN General Assembly
Officially named the 'United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund' until 1953
Original goal was to administer emergency aid/healthcare to children in countries devastated by World War II
In 1950, expanded globally and has a presence in over 190 countries and territories (as of 2018)
First Chairman: Dr. Ludwik Rajchman (1946-50)
First Executive Director: Maurice Pate (1947-65)

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1965)
Motto: 'For every child Health, Education, Equality, Protection, Advance Humanity.'

Why they might be annoying:

They have been criticized for failing to adequately address high infant mortality rates in impoverished areas.
They have been actively opposing international adoption, and of leading to the sharp global decline in said adoptions.
They are loathed by many Pro-Life groups for prioritizing family planning (or 'contraceptive-distribution, abortion-performing and sterilization-providing').
An internal audit revealed gross malfeasance by several chapters; some of which allocated less than 50% of total funds to those who actually needed aid (2008).
A New York fundraiser headlined by Madonna and Gucci turned out to be such a corrupt fiasco that the public relations firm behind it came under investigation by the state of New York (2008).
Kinda hard to say no to schoolkids who show up on your doorstep every Halloween with a big orange box going 'Trick or Treat for UNICEF!' (so hopefully that goes to where its needed...)

Why they might not be annoying:

They became a permanent part of the United Nations System (1953).
They were awarded the Spanish government's highest honor - the Princess of Asturias Award of Concord (2006).
They focus on providing impoverished children with clean water, food, medicine and education.
They promote HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention in impoverished nations.
It was the first global charity to make use of celebrity ambassadors to advocate its causes (most notably Danny Kaye and Audrey Hepburn).
By 1965, they had opened over 30,000 health centers within 120 countries.
They promote entrepreneurism by helping locals start small businesses - often dairies or factories for the production of dried milk to benefit the community's children.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, as well as the UNICEF Greeting Card program partnered with Hallmark, has amassed countless millions in charitable funds.
