    Born in Calcutta, India
    Best known to Western audiences for portraying Dr. Aziz Ahmed in David Lean's 'A Passage to India' (1984)
    Also appeared in the films 'The Chess Players' (1977), 'Hullabaloo Over Georgie and Bonnie's Pictures' (1978), 'The Home and the World' (1984), 'Bitter Moon' (1992), 'It Was Raining That Night' (2005), 'Home Delivery' (2005) and 'Delhi in a Day' (2012)

Why he might be annoying:

    He grew up in a palace with over 40 servants.
    He chain smokes.
    His initial reaction when told that David Lean wanted him was 'Forget it. When Western filmmakers look for an Indian, they only want him to play a snake charmer, a chauffeur or a peanut vendor.'
    Dame Peggy Aschroft asked that he be allowed to accept on her behalf if she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 'A Passage to India,' but the Academy chose Angela Lansbury instead.
    He began appearing in formulaic Bollywood films, commenting 'I've had enough of fame. Now I just want money.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was a lead tenor for the Calcutta Light Opera Group and was offered a scholarship to train in opera at Trinity College in Dublin.
    He won Indian National Film Awards in three categories: best supporting actor (for 'Ghare Bairey'), cinematographer (for 'Where No Journeys End') and best exploration/adventure film (for 'The Splendour of Garhwal and Roopkund').
    He played a key role in organizing the Screen Extras Union of India.
    He funds a school for poor villagers in Upper Assam.
    The New York Times described him as 'India personified.'
