The Resume

    (December 8, 1894-October 13, 1938)
    Born in Chester, Illinois
Birth name was Elzie Crisler Segar
Created the comic strip ‘Thimble Theater’ (1919)
    Introduced the character Popeye (1929)

Why he might be annoying:

He sported an ‘MPO’ (Motion Picture Operator) tattoo from an early job as a movie projectionist.
He sent his first cartoon to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch with the note, ‘You should print this cartoon because my uncle works in your press room.’ It was rejected.
Before introducing Popeye, ‘Thimble Theater’ was dominated by the punnily named Oyl family (Olive Oyl, her brother Castor Oyl and their parents Nana and Cole Oyl).
He used a drawing of a cigar as his signature.

Why he might not be annoying:

He turned a $20 investment in a correspondence drawing course into a $400,000-a-year career.
He sent checks to Frank ‘Rocky’ Fiegle, the real-life inspiration for Popeye.
He taught skeet-shooting to Clark Gable.
Charles Schulz and R. Crumb both cited ‘Thimble Theater’ with Popeye as an influence on their work.
