He was an alcoholic for many years.
He died on the eve of Monty Python's 20th anniversary, which fellow Python Terry Jones called 'greatest act of party pooping in history.'

He was a member of the most successful comedy troupe in history.
Wrote and co-wrote many of the most popular Monty Python sketches, including the most popular one, 'The Parrot Sketch.'
He was a qualified M.D.
He overcame his longtime alcoholism.
He raised a teenage runaway with his longtime partner David Sherlock.
Despite no formal acting training he became Monty Python's best actor, often playing the lead characters.
He adored bad taste and the politically incorrect.
