Why he might be annoying:

    He was effeminate and eccentric.
He was a compulsive shopper, often making binge purchases on the same item.
He spent the majority of his time with elderly women, leading some people in the town to question his sexuality.
He shot Marjorie Nugent in a fit of rage and stashed her body in the meat freezer.
He embezzled more then $3 million of Marjorie's money, financing local businesses and the church expansion, along with purchasing gifts and creating scholarships for local residents.
He lied twice to the authorities about Marjorie's whereabouts, before confessing he murdered her.
Despite confessing, many of the town's residents sympathized with him.
He concocted many stories about Marjorie's disappearance over a nine month period, which came undone when her financial planner tried to reach her, and when that proved to be unsuccessful, he contacted her family.
Some supporters of Marjorie Nugent felt he was released from his sentence, as a result of the film.
Due to his overwhelming popularity in Carthage, the district attorney Danny Buck Davidson requested a change of venue, in order to give him a fair trial.

Why he might not be annoying:

He lost his mother at the age of 2, after she was killed in a car crash.
He took an interest in the funeral business, after he felt there was a need for compassionate people.
He was described by many as being able to pull off an elaborate funeral, with grace and class.
He was considered a popular figure in the town of Carthage.
As part of his release conditions, he lived with Richard Linklater during the filming of 'Bernie.'
He often spent time with the elderly widows in the weeks after their husband's deaths, citing they were at their most vulnerable.
