The Resume

    (June 3, 1930-September 25, 1999)
    Born in Albany, New York
    Science fiction and fantasy author
Most well known for her Darkover and Mists of Avalon series
Graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas
In 2000 received a World Fantasy Award lifetime achievement award

Why she might be annoying:

She was married and divorced twice, her second husband was a convicted child molester and she admitted knowledge of his activities.
Early in her career she wrote lesbian porn, including 'I am a Lesbian' under various pen names, and was active in gay rights, but never revealed her own sexuality.
She was heavily into the whole neopagan/New Age thing for much of her adult life.
She left her literary estate to her protégé, Mercedes Lackey, and not her family.
She once wrote an article explaining that prayers are not answered because people either don't really mean them or don't want them answered enough.
'The Mists of Avalon' is her only work to have been filmed.
Except for the World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement, she never received a major award.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her work usually featured strong female leads and supporting characters.
Her Darkover series is one of the largest and most successful in science fiction history.
She allowed other writers and even fans to place works in her universes especially the Darkover universe.
She started and edited the 'Sword and Sorceress' anthology that featured sword and sorcery stories with female leads. Now with over twenty annual volumes (it was continued after her death) it is one of the most successful anthology series in fantasy history.
She helped many up and coming writers like Mercedes Lackey.
She was a big Andre Norton fan and named her as an influence.
She named and helped found The Society for Creative Anachronism.
