Why he might be annoying:

He was known for his short temper, which inspired the nicknames ‘Terrible Tommy’ and ‘Thunder Bolt.’
His frequent throwing and breaking of clubs during rounds prompted the PGA to adopt a rule banning the behavior.
He was fined so often that he set up a special account to make the payments.
He said, ‘Do people come out to watch me hit golf shots, the way they do Ben Hogan and Sam Snead? No, they come out for one reason and one reason only. They want to see me blow my top. And I’m sorry to say, I’ve obliged them.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to his wife Mary Lou for 51 years.
He served in the Army during World War II.
A sports writer noted that despite his reputation for a short fuse, ‘Off the course, he was charming, amusing, possessed of a genuine sense of humor.’
After lipping out of the hole on six consecutive putts, he shook his fist at the sky and shouted, ‘Why don’t you come down here and fight like a man?’
