He refused to go to the Detroit Tigers as he was traded from the Milwaukee Braves' minor league team (May 28, 1959).

He and Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts were roommates.
He was the third base coach of the 1979 World Series winning Pirates team under manager Chuck Tanner.

He was married to his wife, Alvida, for over 55 years until his death.
