    Born in Berlin, Germany
    Director of the Bauhaus school of design (1919-28)
    Buildings that he designed include the Fagus-Werk factory in Alfeld an der Leine, Germany (1914); the Bauhaus school and faculty buildings in Dessau, Germany (1925); the Gropius House in Lincoln, Massachusetts (1937); the Harvard Graduate Center (1949); the University of Baghdad (1957); the PanAm Building in New York City (1958); the US Embassy in Athens, Greece (1959); and the John F. Kennedy Federal Office Building in Boston (1963)

Why he might be annoying:

    He never did master mechanical drawing and in school had to hire someone to complete his assignments.
    He teamed up with a businessman to sell the 'Packaged House System,' which built homes out of prefabricated parts, but it never caught on.
    He liked to top off his business suit with a beret.

Why he might not be annoying:

    While serving in the signal corps during World War I, he survived being buried in rubble and earned the Iron Cross.
    His daughter Manon died of polio at age 18.
    He fled Germany for the US after the Nazis took over.
    The Bauhaus style became a major influence on modern architecture and design.
    He said, 'The mind is like an umbrella; it functions best when open.'
