    Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    Birth name was Kate Douglas Smith
    Wrote 'The Birds' Christmas Carol' (1887), 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm' (1903), 'Rose o' the River' (1905), 'Mother Carey's Chickens' (1911) and 'My Garden of Memory' (1923)

Why she might be annoying:

    She was required to retire from her teaching job when she married.
    Although known as a children's author, she never had any children of her own.
    After her death, a grandnephew wrote sequels to 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.'

Why she might not be annoying:

    She founded the first free kindergarten west of the Rockies, in San Francisco (1878).
    She and her sister established a training school for kindergarten teachers.
    Although forced to leave teaching, she remained devoted to her schools, and raised money for them through her writing.
