Author

The Resume

    (1672-August 29, 1769)
    Born in England, United Kingdom
Wrote treatises on whist, backgammon, chess, quadrille, piquet and brag
Compiled as 'Mr. Hoyle's Games Complete' (1750)

Why he might be annoying:

Little is known about his early life.
He was a charter inductee into the Poker Hall of Fame even though he never wrote about the game.
In the same way that there are tons of 'Webster's' dictionaries with no link to Noah Webster, many rule books for card games have Hoyle in the title but no connection to him.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a lawyer, but gave that up for the more respectable career of whist tutor.
His treatise on whist was the definitive authority for over a century, until new rules were adopted in 1864.
He entered the language with 'according to Hoyle' being used to indicate playing by the rules or, more generally, doing something correctly.
