He had a reputation as a playboy.

His reputation preceded him to the point that at one of his later weddings, the officiating mayor of Neuilly said: 'Ah, good day, Monsieur Barclay, what a pleasure to see you yet again.'
He sold his record label to Polygram, although he retained a twenty percent interest.

He was a self-taught musician.
He wrote the original soundtracks for several films.
He lured three top singer-composers to Barclay: Charles Aznavour (who stayed 22 years); Leo Ferre (who recorded some of his greatest songs at the label); and Jacques Brel (who deserted Philips to join Barclay in 1962).
He helped to launch Dalida's career by producing her earliest hit records.
He was a Jazz enthusiast.
He produced records for Ray Charles and Duke Ellington - their first in France.
He survived treatment for throat cancer and underwent quadruple bypass surgery after a heart attack.
