Why he might be annoying:

He would play jazz on the sly while studying classical music at Dillard University. (‘The dean would get a report that we were over there ruining pianos playing jazz on them.’)
His fondness for bebop made him an outsider on the New Orleans jazz scene.
He was overshadowed by his children.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Dolores Marsalis for 58 years.
In addition to his sons, his students included Harry Connick, Jr., and Terence Blanchard.
He and his sons were jointly named NEA Jazz Masters (2011).
He was named a Man of Music by the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the highest honor given by the fraternity (2015).
