    Portrayed Sapphire Stevens in the radio and TV versions of 'Amos 'n' Andy'
    Appeared in the movies 'Cabin in the Sky' (1943), 'Song of the South' (voice only, 1946), 'The Guns of Fort Petticoat' (1957) and 'Critic's Choice' (1963)

Why she might be annoying:

    She began performing at age four.
    She sang in a group called the Four Hot Chocolates.
    Many critics felt the shrewish and manipulative Sapphire was a negative stereotype of black women.
    A number of trivia books erroneously claim that she was the mother of musician Billy Preston.

Why she might not be annoying:

    She was a talented organist and singer.
    She was one of the few cast members to tone down the dialect in the 'Amos 'n' Andy' scripts.
    She said about the show, 'I know there were those who were offended by it, but I still have people stop me on the street to tell me how much they enjoyed it. And many of those people are black members of the NAACP.'
