Her incredible improvement from swim meet to swim meet did not seem natural.
East Germany was accused of giving their swim team illegal performance enhancement drugs. She was never accused, but one never knows.
Unlike other swimmers, she did not lift weights.

Why she might not be annoying:

At 13, she won her first Olympic Medal (1972).
She said: 'I had a naturally perfect freestyle stroke. I was used as an example to others.'
She was selected #68 by Sports Illustrated for Women's Century's Greatest Sportswomen.
Her grandmother fled East Germany and lived in Kansas.
