Fictional Place

The Resume

    Fictional sunken continent
Existence proposed by 1864 by explorer Philip Sclater to explain similar animals found in Madagascar and India but not in Africa
Presumably located in the Indian Ocean
Some claim it was located in the Pacific Ocean
    Also known as Mu

Why Lemuria might be annoying:

A lot of kooks have jumped on the Lemuria bandwagon over the years including:
JZ Knight (who claims it was located off the coast of the state of Washington) and whose commanding general Ramtha she channels.
Madame Helena Blavatsky who claims it was inhabited by seven foot, egg-laying hermaphrodites who were destroyed by the gods for bestiality.
Frederick Spencer Oliver who claim the survivors live in Mount Shasta in Oregon.
Between Atlantis, Ry'leh, Lemuria, and Kumari Kandam, the ocean's bottoms are getting a little crowded.
According to most of the kooks (and Marvel comics) it was destroyed in a war with Atlantis.

Why Lemuria might not be annoying:

The original idea of Sclater, though incorrect, was a reasonable explanation for an actual scientific phenomena.
A lot of very good science fiction has been centered around Lemuria like the Perry Rhodan series of sci-fi books, the Submariner comics, the works of Robert E. Howard, Lin Carter and various computer/online games among others.
Long before Sclater proposed Lemuria, the Tamils of India had a legend of a continent in the India Ocean that had sunk eons before called Kumari Kandan.
Since it is physically impossible for it to have existed, claiming it did is an excellent way to identify loons.
The Kerguelen Plateau, which sank 20 million years ago, really was a land bridge between Madagascar and India but sank far too long ago to account for Philip Sclater's observations.
