Why he might be annoying:

    His nickname was 'Quail.'
    He was traded by the Cardinals midway through his second season, a year after winning the NL Rookie of the Year honors.
    He retired as a player after the 1965 season, only to return for a handful of games three years later.
    He was a consolation hire for the Yankees, after they were unable to land their initial hire, Dick Williams as a result of a league imposed veto, due to the fact Williams was still under contract with Oakland (1973).
    He was the target of death threats from Yankees fans for his decision to play Elliott Maddox over Bobby Mercer, which he did out of spite for Mercer.
    He was fired by the Yankees, after Billy Martin became available in his first of four managerial stints with the team.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He made the most of his opportunity to be a full-time major league player when he was acquired by the Cardinals.
    He was a member of both the Pirates World Series championship teams (1960 as a player and 1971 as a coach).
    He was part of a formidable outfield duo with Roberto Clemente in Pittsburgh.
    He guided the Astros to the first two playoff berths in franchise history.
    He left the Astros as the franchise's all-time leader in wins at the time of his dismissal.
    He served aa a guest instructor for the Pirates and was involved with the team's alumni association for close to 30 years at the time of his death.
