U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (October 4, 1943-May 17, 2021)
    Born in Shreveport, Louisiana
Birth name was Charles Elson Roemer III
Member of the US House of Representatives from Louisiana’s 4th District (1981-88)
    Governor of Louisiana (1988-92)

Why he might be annoying:

In the House of Representatives, he ticked off fellow Democrats by voting for Ronald Reagan’s tax and spending policies.
Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill said that he was ‘often wrong but never in doubt.’
His tax and fiscal reform proposals were rejected by Louisiana voters in a constitutional referendum.
His decision to change party affiliation from Democrat to Republican shortly before the gubernatorial election alienated his old party without gaining much support among members of his new party.
The state Republican convention endorsed Rep. Clyde Holloway for governor over him.
He finished third in the race for governor, setting up a runoff between ethically dubious Edwin Edwards and Klansman David Duke.
He ran unsuccessfully for the 2012 Presidential nomination of the Republicans, the Reform Party, and Americans Elect.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was valedictorian of his high school.
Before entering politics, he founded two banks and ran a computer company.
He was a founding member of the House Grace Caucus, a bipartisan group recommending cost-saving measures for the federal government.
Political scientist Ron Gomez called him ‘a dynamic orator who could light up an audience with his first two sentences. When he got wound up it was truly evangelical, and he made sense.’
During his presidential campaign, he starred in an ad for Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC that lampooned the flimsiness of the legal restrictions preventing Super PACs from coordinating with the candidates they support.
