Why he might be annoying:

    He swung from being a member of several far-right political movements as a youth to joining the Socialist Party.
    He personally approved the bombing of a Greenpeace ship, which killed a photographer.
    He had a daughter, Mazarine, out of wedlock.
    He used an 'anti-terror' unit to obtain wiretaps on journalists and rival politicians.
    After Mitterrand's death, his physician revealed he had published false health reports since 1981 to hide his cancer.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During World War II, he was wounded, taken prisoner, then escaped from German captivity.
    He served as a spy for the Free French.
    He was married to his wife for 52 years.
    He was France's longest-serving president.
