U.S. Senator

The Resume

    (December 14, 1897-May 29, 1995)
    Born in Skowhegan, Maine
US Representative (1940-49) and Senator (1949-73) from Maine
    Republican

Why she might be annoying:

When her husband was mayor of Skowhegan, he got her a job in the city tax assessment office, then got her a job as a reporter at a newspaper he co-owned.
She lost her last election after alienating liberals by supporting the war in Vietnam and angering conservatives by opposing President Nixon's nominees for the Supreme Court.
Her last primary challenger taunted her for being out of touch with the state, noting she did not have an office in Maine.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was the first woman elected to both the House and the Senate.
She was the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the Presidency at a major party convention (1964).
She was an early opponent of Senator Joseph McCarthy.
She said, 'I don't want to see the Republican Party ride to victory on the Four Horsemen of Calumny: Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry and Smear.'
