    Before writing, she worked for the state of New York as a welfare administrator.
    She originally planned to be an illustrator of children's books, but realized that she preferred writing over illustrating.
    She finds writing contemporary fiction difficult 'because I am not really in the popular culture -- I don't have a TV.'
    The inspiration for 'Ella Enchanted': 'I had to write something and couldn't think of a plot, so I decided to write a Cinderella story because it already had a plot.'

    Her first published book, 'Ella Enchanted,' won a Newberry Honor.
    'Publishers Weekly' wrote that her heroines 'defy fairy-tale stereotypes.'
    She holds writing workshops for the children in her community: 'It's great. It's the best thing I do, I think.'
