Why he might be annoying:

He wrote some truly weird stuff which could literally give you a headache.
He didn't begin writing until he was over forty.
None of his work has ever been filmed.
He wrote a four volume autobiography.
He lived for most of his adult life with his sister.
An electrical engineer, he did little to work his mathematical and science background into his writings.

Why he might not be annoying:

It's impossible to describe his writing style, but if you at least like Kurt Vonnegut or Craig Kee Strete, you'll probably like him.
An Iowa native and devout Catholic, he worked Catholic and Native American (he strongly supported Native American rights and culture) imagery into his works.
Gene Wolfe called him, 'The most original writer in the history of literature' and Neil Gaiman said that during the late sixties and early seventies he was, 'the best short story writer in the world.'
He served in the U. S. Army during WWII.
He suffered terribly from poor health later in life, including a series of strokes.
