He started recording polkas before moving on to country.
He smoked two packs a day, but cut back to one after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

'Smoke! Smoke! Smoke!' was Capitol Records' first million seller.
As shown by that two-pack a day habit, he sang what he knew.
He warned about 'smok[ing] yourself to death' two decades before the surgeon general.
