Despite winning numerous world cup races and setting many world records, he always found some way to end up without a medal when it was time for the Olympics.
He divorced his first wife.

Why he might not be annoying:

His 27 year old sister died hours before his first race in the 1988 Olympics (February 14, 1988).
He slipped and fell, which prevented him from finishing the race.
He also fell a few days later in his other race, even as he was on pace to win gold and set a world record.
In 1994, competing in his final Olympic race, he finally won a gold medal, setting a world record in the 1000 meters.
He established the Dan Jansen Foundation that helps children, in memory of his sister.
He is ranked in People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in the World (1994).
