U.S. Supreme Court Justice

The Resume

    (June 8, 1917-April 15, 2002)
Appointed Associate Supreme Court Justice by John F. Kennedy (April 16, 1962-June 28, 1993)
Nicknamed 'Whizzer' from his days as a star tailback for the University of Colorado
Running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1938) and the Detroit Lions (1940-41)
Led the NFL in running attempts and yards gained (1938 & 1940)
Died of pneumonia at 84 (2002)
Graduated first in his class at Yale law school

Why he might be annoying:

What the hell kind of nickname is Whizzer? (sounds like somebody with an overactive bladder)
He led the NFL in touchdowns in 1938 with 4. (4 lousy touchdowns?)
He liked politics and politicians, saying if it weren't for law he might have become a governor, but 'not for very long.'
He cast a dissenting vote in the 1966 Miranda vs Arizona case, believing cops should not have Constitutional restrictions placed on them.
He and William Rehnquist were the 2 dissenting votes in the 7-2 landmark Roe vs Wade decision (1973).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He hated his nickname.
Though his college team was beaten in the 1938 Cotton Bowl, 28-14, he was responsible for both of his team's touchdowns.
He was 1938 NFL Rookie of the Year and his pay helped him complete law school.
He served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He stated of his Roe decision, 'As an exercise of raw judicial power, the Court perhaps has authority to do what it does today; but, in my view, its judgment is an improvident and extravagant exercise of the power of judicial review that the Constitution extends to this Court.'
At 31 years, he was one of the longest serving justices in Supreme Court history, writing over 500 opinions.
At his eulogy his classmate and friend, Senior U.S. District Judge Louis Oberdorfer, spoke of his 'sheer intellectual power, exquisitely good judgment, and perfectionist's attention to detail.'
