He was a perfectionist and a bully to his musicians.

He was a cheapskate and a womanizer who abandoned his family.

He was painfully shy, and was cold and aloof onstage.
He was cross-eyed as a child.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was so influential that a whole style of country music became known as ‘bluegrass’ (after his band, the Blue Grass Boys).
He was a mandolin virtuoso.
He had terrible eyesight, but learned new music by ear.
He discovered the great bluegrass duo Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs.
He survived cancer and heart surgery.
He continued to tour into his eighties.
He was a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Honor, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy.
People worried that he would be angry when Elvis Presley did a rockabilly cover of ‘Blue Moon of Kentucky,’ but he loved it.
