The Resume

    (September 21, 1640-June 9, 1701)
    Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France
Son of King Louis XIII and Anne of Austria
Younger brother of King Louis XIV
Duke of Anjou (1640-60) and Orleans (1660-1701)

Why he might be annoying:

He ran up large debts gambling.
His second wife said, 'Monsieur thinks of nothing but his male favorites. He spends whole nights in orgies with them and gives them enormous sums of money.'
He went into battle wearing makeup, ribbons and jewelry, but without a hat so he could show off his elaborate hairdo.
He broke into tears when his lover, the Chevalier de Lorraine, refused to give him a new face cream recipe.

Why he might not be annoying:

His effeminate tendencies were encouraged by his mother to reduce any threat he posed to his brother's rule.
Despite a lack of military training, he proved a courageous soldier, winning a major victory over the Dutch at Cassels (1677).
He was a patron of the playwright Moliere.
