Why she might be annoying:

    Her grandfather, Bernard Akin, was one of the conspirators in the 1964 murder of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner.
    She opposed interracial marriages, saying, 'I feel at this time intermixing could lead to more problems.'
    She said that when her reign as Miss America ended, 'I didn't feel important anymore. I didn't feel wanted.'
    She became an alcoholic and was addicted to opiates.
    She attempted suicide by crashing her car into a culvert (1999).

Why she might not be annoying:

    She noted about her grandfather, 'That's something that doesn't involve me. I wasn't even born.'
    She served as a spokesperson for the National Down Syndrome Association, having had a sister with Down syndrome who died when Susan was in high school.
    Her opiate addiction resulted from the painkillers she had been prescribed after a 1987 car crash.
    She has been clean and sober since completing rehab (1999).
    One of her competitors, Miss Pennsylvania Lea Schiazza, wrote, 'She's the girl I stared at all week.... She's what Miss America should look like.'
