Why she might be annoying:

    Her birth year is listed as both 1915 and 1919.
    She was investigated by Joseph McCarthy over her left-wing activism.
    She divorced Charles White, one of her art instructors.
    A few years later she married Mexican artist Francisco Mora.

Why she might not be annoying:

    Three of her grandparents were slaves.
    Her father died before she was born.
    She won a competitive exam for a scholarship to the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh but was rejected because she was black.
    As a graduate student at the University of Iowa, she was not allowed to live in the dorms due to race.
    In 1947 she moved to Mexico to escape the McCarthy investigation.
    Her sculptures represent the struggles of women, African Americans, the working class and other oppressed peoples.
    Her son is jazz musician Francisco Mora and model Naima Mora is her granddaughter.
