The story that her aunt, an ex-chorus girl, got her started in films may have been studio hype.
She was typecast by D.W. Griffith as a long suffering virgin.
In a notorious scene from ‘The Birth of a Nation’ she jumps off a cliff to avoid being raped by a black man.
Her career quickly went downhill when she left Griffith to work for Samuel Goldwyn.
Goldwyn gave her the bizarre moniker ‘The Whim Girl.’

Film critics often consider her to be one of the silent era’s best actresses.

When he was a teenager, Ernest Hemingway claimed to be engaged to her.
She made a comeback in the thirties, often playing memorable supporting roles for admirer John Ford.
