    He made several controversial comments about George W. Bush during Bush's presidency.
    He didn't attend friend Coretta Scott King's funeral because it was held in a church know for its anti-gay pastor and activism.
    He reportedly referred to Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice as 'tokens.'

    He helped found the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee during the civil rights movement.
    He was refused his seat in the Georgia state House because of his opposition to the Vietnam War.
