The Resume

    (1842- )
    Capital of Oregon
    Seat of Mercer County
Population (city): 149,305 (2006 Census estimate)
    Population (metro area): 379,406
    Nicknamed Cherry City

Why Salem, Oregon might be annoying:

    It is overshadowed by Portland.
The statehouse burned to the ground only two months after completion (1855).
Its replacement also burned down (1935).
It still calls itself the Cherry City even though the annual cherry festival was discontinued after World War I.
It recently started holding dragon boat races similar to the ones held during the Rose Festival in Portland (copy cats)!

Why Salem, Oregon might not be annoying:

Its name comes from the Hebrew word 'shalom,' meaning peace.
Unlike the city it was named for, it never executed anyone for witchcraft.
    It maintains 42 city parks.
It was awarded 'Tree City USA' status by the National Arbor Day Foundation for its dedication to urban forestry.
